REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly
This remarkable novel unfolds in a Manhattan split asunder by the Revolutionary War, where we follow the picaresque adventures of John Stocking, a double agent who has a talent for placing himself in jeopardy. At the same time, Stocking is engaged in a journey to discover who his father is. Charyn provides a stunning gallery of characters, including an elegantly treacherous Alexander Hamilton; Stocking's guardian angel, the outrageous madam Gertrude Jennings; Gertrude's star prostitute, the exotic Clara; and Benedict Arnold. As a kaleidoscopic view of a tumultuous era, the book deserves to be spoken about in the same breath as E.L. Doctorow's Ragtime.

REVIEW: Booklist Review
. *Starred Review* Sarah Donovan is willing to take on any battle. Incensed that women don't have the right to vote, she is active in the woman's suffrage movement.Undertaker Daniel Petterman doesn't understand why Sarah doesn't know her rightful place as a woman. Sure, he's grateful that she was there for his motherless girls, and he's begrudgingly thankful that she helped him recover a misplaced body. But he just doesn't know what to make of her. Nowak's careful attention to historical detail captures the essence of 1876 Denver. Most important, Nowak has come up with believable, non-stereotypical characters and a snappy plot to create a darned good book.

In Roaring '20s New York, Dorian Black is a vampire enforcer who kills his master and leaves his two primary lieutenants to form their own factions, soon battling to win supremacy in the city. When Dorian saves human reporter Gwen Murphy from drowning and finds himself inexplicably drawn to her, she is busy investigating the mysterious deaths of mobsters, all drained of blood. When she discovers the intricate web of urban vampires, they're soon on to her, and she's at risk. Dorian himself gets involved with a vampire organization called Pax, dedicated to peace between vampires, but perhaps not all that it seems. Gwen is the classic intrepid girl reporter, the plot intrigues are well drawn, and the commentary on religious fanaticism is engaging.

The latest tongue-in-cheek blusher from Lee finds that coming out in Willow Creek, Tex., society has its snags. At her own debut, Carlisle Wainwright Cushing failed to execute the Texas Dip properly. Now almost 30 and a successful Boston divorce attorney, Carlisle is summoned home to represent her diva mom in her latest divorce. Carlisle is also asked to rescue the troubled Hundredth Annual Willow Creek Symphony Association Debutante Ball, and to teach seven iffy debs-to-be the TexasDip. But the attorney representing her mother's soon-to-be-ex is Carlisle's old heart-throb, the former bad boy Jack Blair. Can she allow her renewed feelings for Jack to "come out"? Lee depicts Carlisle and the antiquated debutante tradition with equal parts chagrin and tenderness.
