How I Paid for College: A Novel of Sex, Theft, Friendship & Musical Theater by Marc Acito (2004) Find it in our catalog. ...OR.... See published reviews!
In this story, Edward, the main character, has to earn [his own] tuition to the acting school of his dreams to pursue an acting career his father thinks is a joke and a waste of money. Along the way, Edward and his friends experience theft and homosexuality as well as blackmail in the senior year of high school that they will never forget.... I connected with the quirky boy and was really rooting for him in the long run. When he went to his school audition I actually wanted him to get in…. The book … often caught me off guard. —Jess

Leave Myself Behind by Bart Yates (2004) Find it in our catalog. ...OR.... See published reviews!
This book was centered around a confused homosexual teen who has just moved into a new Victorian home that has become a construction site for his mother, literally…. Not only does J.D., the son, have to deal with his emotionally unstable single mother, but also the bullies at school who are dismantling him and his boyfriend for their sexuality. This book will entertain all because it is humorous and attention grabbing, as long as you can deal with a little graphics and curses. —Rachel

Hard Love by Ellen Wittlinger (2001) Find it in our catalog. ...OR.... See published reviews!
This book is about a boy who is growing up and dealing with his parents’ divorce. He falls in love with a girl who turns out to be a lesbian. Reading about the boy falling in love with Marisol is very comedic and it is a real love story. There is one part where the boy takes Marisol to the prom and everything that could possibly go wrong does. Anyone who enjoys a funny teenage love story will love the book Hard Love. —Andrew
