06/01/2006 REVIEW: School Library Journal

Gr 6-9 -In the hands of motivated and experienced science students, this book will be the springboard to successful and original projects. For others, it will calm last-minute nerves. Although the author urges readers to use the ideas as a beginning point, the projects are completely outlined from start to finish with explanations and definitions. Background information, materials, hypothesis, and results and conclusions are included. The volume opens with -Tips from a Science Fair Judge.- The following 100 projects range from model building to analyzing data and are grouped into nine categories such as -Magnet Madness- and -Amusing Math.- Reading through the -Background- and -Results and Conclusion- sections provides plenty of fodder for the scientifically ungrounded. Unfortunately, without some knowledge of the basic concepts, students may not understand how all the conclusions are reached. Safety warnings and a measurement conversion chart are included. A limited number of black-and-white illustrations clarify the steps. For a beginner-s introduction to the science-fair experience, try Joe Rhatigan and Heather Smith-sSure-to-Win Science Fair Projects (Sterling, 2001).-Carol S. 01/01/1996 REVIEW: School Library Journal

Gr 3-5--Sixty simple activities that use easy-to-find equipment and materials. "Rock Collection, City-Style'' teaches grouping and classification; "Fade Out'' investigates how sunlight affects colors; "Banana Cooker'' uses heat and light to ripen fruit; "The Great Soap Race'' compares how long different brands of soaps last. Entries include materials needed, the procedure, an explanation of the results, and a "Something More'' section that adds variations to the projects and encourages young scientists to be creative in their explorations. Illustrated with appealing black-and-white drawings, the book is appropriate for students to use on their own (with adult supervision) or for parents to use with younger children. Filling an ever-present need, it is a good addition to science collections.--Helen Rosenberg, Chicago Public Library, IL

02/01/2001 REVIEW: School Library Journal

Gr 5-9-Vivien Bowers's Crime Science (Owl, 1997) explains techniques used by investigators to solve crimes. Rainis's volume explores some of these same methods through experiments. The book opens with a definition of forensic science, a table outlining what work is done in a crime lab, a list of some careers in the field, and a discussion of the basic steps involved in producing a science project. It also cautions readers about safety (some materials and solutions require adult supervision). Chapters that follow cover such topics as fingerprints, inks, writing samples, fibers, forgeries, and blood evidence. The explanations are well written, and unfamiliar terms are clearly defined within the text. Numerous black-and-white line drawings, charts, and diagrams offer further clarification. Throughout the book, specific suggestions for turning the investigations into full-fledged science projects are provided. Students are also asked to consider the evidence in six different cases based on the discussions. Solutions are provided in the back of the book. An interesting and useful addition.-Marilyn Long Graham, Lee County Library System, Estero, FL

11/01/2002 REVIEW: School Library Journal

Gr 6-9-Those looking for demonstrations of scientific principles will find unique experiments here. Each chapter introduces a new topic and contains several experiments, followed by a page of "Project Ideas and Further Investigations." Safety tips and warnings, which include asking for adult help, appear in both titles. Materials needed are listed in shaded boxes and are generally easy to obtain, and the large, clear, captioned diagrams assist in explaining concepts and showing how to re-create the activities. Fish Tank addresses "Cohesion, Adhesion, and Capillary Action"; "Surface Tension"; "Floating and Sinking"; and more. Experiments can be done with fish in the tank; readers who don't own one are given alternatives where possible. Science Fair requires more advanced knowledge of science terminology and vocabulary; terms such as "vomeronasal organ" might be difficult for some readers to understand, and there is no pronunciation guide. Students will enjoy learning about smell and taste through projects with food odors, socks, jelly beans, and more. Libraries serving populations that are interested in science fairs will find these two books worth purchasing.-Michael McCullough, Byron-Bergen Middle School, Bergen, NY

03/01/2002 REVIEW: School Library Journal

Gr 3-8-At first glance, one might be turned off by the text-heavy format, the two-color print (blue and teal), and the sheer density of this presentation. But those who take the time for a closer examination will discover a wealth of fun and exploration within. The short, easy-to-do experiments and activities are arranged by topic, and separate chapters are devoted to inspirations from the toy store, the supermarket, the drugstore, the hardware store, and the stationery store. Life sciences, chemistry and earth science, physical science, and technology are all addressed. Materials for each experiment are listed in order of use and "Observations & Suggestions" spell out experiment results as well as other related activities. Safety precautions are provided throughout the text. An unobtrusive scale next to each experiment records the challenge level as either low, middle, or high. There are subject, discipline, and challenge indexes. This title is useful for science buffs, science-fair projects, and for teachers looking for ways to put more zest into their lessons.-Eunice Weech, M. L. King Elementary School, Urbana, IL

Jacket Notes:

"Will my hot chocolate cool down faster if I add the cold milk now or later? Will ketchup flow faster if it's stirred first?" Taking first place in the science fair has never been so much fun! These biology, chemistry, and physics experiments, devised by a real scientist and former high school chemistry teacher, really rock. That's because each activity answers questions that actually fascinate kids--whether they're exploring the laws of motion by smashing eggs against a wall, learning how to use diapers to prevent fire, or going "Supersonic" as they measure the speed of sound. Also, there's great advice on designing your own experiments, catching errors that could affect the results; and presenting the project so that it will impress the judges.

03/01/2006 REVIEW: School Library Journal

Gr 4-7 -This title opens with an introduction to science-fair projects, followed by sections devoted to project ideas in biology, physical science, and chemistry. Most of the experiments call for common household items. The simple, easy-to-follow directions are geared toward beginners. The layout is open, colorful, and appealing, with photographs of students and materials on every spread and boxed areas that highlight specific topics or ideas. Readers are encouraged to follow safety procedures, including wearing closed-toe shoes and goggles when necessary. The conversational text discusses how to pick a topic and offers a hands-on approach to planning the project, including an eight-week schedule checklist. Libraries would be well served by this title.-Maren Ostergard, Bellevue Regional Library, WA

02/01/2005 REVIEW: School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up -"This intriguing book uses the common bicycle to offer readers a variety of science-fair ideas. Beginning with a history of the bicycle, the book then covers the easier experiments while the more complicated ones are provided in the final two chapters. Solid advice is also offered, such as encouraging students to keep a notebook to record ideas, data, and observations. Each experiment includes a list of the materials required, and many include another box that elaborates on how the ideas presented can be expanded upon. The materials required are items typically found in most households, such as chalk, yardstick, marbles, etc. Experiments include using a bicycle to measure speed and distance, how the force of friction opposes the motion of a bike, and the transfer of energy from rider to bicycle. Simple black-and-white illustrations and photographs help to clarify the scientific principles presented. A useful and potentially fun approach to science.-"Maren Ostergard, Bellevue Regional Library, WA

04/01/2000 REVIEW: School Library Journal

Gr 6-9-This book presents 32 experiments accompanied by several "project ideas," which offer less detailed instructions and encourage readers to develop their own procedures. Students are told how to turn milk into cheese, test the sugar content of cookies, and encouraged to try other intriguing activities. Some, such as constructing an ice-cream maker, will require a lot more background than is offered here. However, the text emphasizes the questions of science rather than offering answers. The experiments themselves often include suggestions for readers to explore the topic further. Some of these activities are simple and straightforward, such as putting celery sticks in water to test wilting properties. Others are more complicated, such as the investigation of color and photosynthesis. Instructions are fairly clear, but are given in a narrative format that might trip up kids used to numbered steps. Though they involve supermarket products, many will require extra materials as well (Lugol's iodine, elodea plant). Some knowledge of chemistry and decent math skills will make several activities easier to follow, though Tocci does weave some needed concepts into the text. A conversational tone and mild attempts at humor don't really succeed in making the book as much fun as a Vicki Cobb title and may put off older readers for whom many of the projects are suited. Despite some flaws, though, motivated students will find worthwhile material for science fairs.-Steven Engelfried, Deschutes County Library, Bend, OR
