The Forgetting: Alzheimer's: Portrait of an Epidemic by David Shenk Published 2003 by Anchor Books
Paperback, English. ISBN: 9780385498388
Find this book in our catalog.
Jacket Notes:
Afflicting nearly half of all persons over the age of 85, Alzheimer's disease kills nearly 100,000 Americas a year as it insidiously robs them of their memory and wreaks havoc on the lives of their loved ones. It was once minimized and misunderstood as forgetfulness in the elderly, but Alzheimer's is now at the forefront of many medical and scientific agendas, for as the world's population ages, the disease will kill millions more and touch the lives of virtually everyone.
The Forgetting is a scrupulously researched, multilayered analysis of Alzheimer's and its social, medical, and spiritual implications. David Shenk presents us with much more than a detailed explanation of its causes and effects and the search for a cure. He movingly captures the disease's impact on its victims and their families, and he looks back through history, explaining how Alzheimer's most likely afflicted such figures as Jonathan Swift, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and William de Kooning. The result is a searing, powerfully engaging account of Alzheimer's disease, offering a grim but sympathetic and ultimately encouraging portrait.

REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 01/14/2002
"I have a clear sense of history, I just don't know whether it is mine," writes DeBaggio in this moving and unusual memoir. The author, who has previously written about his gardening business (Growing Herbs from Seed, Cutting and Root), documents his mental deterioration from Alzheimer's. Diagnosed with the disease in 1999 at the age of 57, DeBaggio undertook this project in order to increase awareness of this devastating illness from a patient's point of view. He describes how his gradual loss of memory has impacted his life. For example, after he became confused about how to get to his niece's house, he realized he had to give up driving a car. The increased loss of language has been extremely difficult for a man who once worked as a journalist and a freelance writer. Interspersed throughout the narrative are DeBaggio's recollections of his childhood events that may soon be lost to him. He also describes the disease's negative effect on his wife and grown son. Although DeBaggio provides information on the medical advances that are being made to treat this disease, it is clear that a breakthrough will come too late for him. With this rare first-person account, DeBaggio has made a significant contribution to literature on an illness that currently affects four million Americans. (Mar.)

Through her own story and through interviews with doctors and other women who've followed the "Daughter Track"--leaving a job to care for an aging parent--Geist offers emotional insight into one of the most difficult situations a son or daughter may face during his or her life.
REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 06/02/2008
"For everyone who loves someone with Alzheimer's," Geist observes, "there are markers and moments that tell you the disease is on the way." Her account of two years spent "helping a person with Alzheimer's stay in this world" is both travel guide and love story-neither in the conventional sense. As Geist makes her way, "trying new things, failing, scratching plans, making mistakes, and starting all over again," she uses her professional skills as a journalist and TV anchor to incorporate conversations with other caregivers, consultation with experts and wide reading in the literature. Sensitive that "Alzheimer's disease affects patients and spouses in many different ways," Geist offers helpful suggestions ("using his words instead of trying to teach him mine") and practical advice ("Doing activities alone is imperative to the survival of a caregiver"). True, there was "a downside to having to come home to help care for my father," but Geist's love of her parents and their love for one another is as palpable as the sadness wrought by the disease. To all readers, she offers a deeply affecting account of personal growth: "I define myself and my life in a whole new way. These days, it is the measure of the heart that matters most to me." (Aug.)

REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 04/26/2004
The concept of "prevention through delay" as presented by Shankle, a neurologist, and Amen, a psychiatrist, is a proactive approach to thwarting dementia. They break this process down into three components that involve knowing and reducing those risk factors you can control; having a regular memory screening to detect problems early; and obtaining an accurate, early diagnosis and treatment. The authors include their Shankle-Amen Early Dementia Detection Questionnaire as a screening tool to assess risk factors, and follow with discussions on ways to reduce risks and take steps for prevention. Useful tables abound, providing a synopsis of environmental, acquired and modifiable risks for dementia; as well as a review of effective prevention agents. The chapter devoted to finding the right diagnosis offers practical advice on how to get a thorough assessment and drives home the importance of this step by telling readers that 95% of persons with dementia are diagnosed by their primary care doctor four or more years after symptoms first appeared. The authors go on to offer an in-depth approach for patients to work with their doctor to make reversing memory loss "a reality." Although there is plenty of information on treating early dementia, much of it may be too technical for lay readers, and the accompanying photos (showing the brain before and after treatments) do little to elucidate treatment and prevention options. However, an excellent section on resources for caregivers and their families, as well as the aforementioned tables, are extremely helpful. Agent, Faith Hamlin. (June 1)

REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 07/02/2001
With grace and precision, Shenk (Data Song), a journalist and occasional NPR commentator, presents a lyric biography of Alzheimer's, "a condition specific to humans and as old as humanity." At one time, doctors thought senility, or dementia, was an inevitable fact of growing older. Now they know that Alzheimer's is a specific, formidable disease that threatens to reach epidemic proportions within the next 50 years. The disease is named for the neurologist who, in 1906, first noticed, in the brain of an autopsied patient, the telltale plaques and tangles that strangle the brain's neurons. Shenk presents a thoughtful and complex rumination on many aspects of Alzheimer's, including anecdotes about the memory loss experienced by Ronald Reagan, Ralph Waldo Emerson and E.B. White. He recounts the tales of caregivers, many of whom become clinically depressed and who, along with physicians, draw an analogy between the developing skills of a child and the decrease in cognitive ability that besets Alzheimer's patients. The author delves deeply into scientific research and explains that though there is as yet no cure, a recently developed vaccine holds great promise for the future. However, he warns, scientific inquiry could be impeded by fierce competition for research dollars. Doctors can now recognize an early stage of "probable Alzheimer's," which means that patients who are slowly sinking into its depths can understand their condition and its destructive path. Shenk movingly recounts a conversation he had with one such patient, who shares interesting ideas for rehabilitative conditioning to slow down his mental deterioration. Agent, Sloan Harris. REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 01/17/1986
Despite greater public awareness and continued research, no cure for Alzeheimer's Disease has yet been found. However, Eisdorfer, president/chief executive officer of Montefiore Medical Center and professor of psychiatry and neurosciences at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Cohen, a gerontologist also affiliated with Montefiore and Einstein College, believe that these accounts of how families have coped with the debilitating disease may help other afflicted families to better manage the lives of the patient and themselves. The authors advise readers on developing and implementing a comprehensive, affordable life care plan to handle both practical and emotional matters. They discuss the sensitive relationships between doctor, family and patient, and the need to consider the interests of individual family members. The selection of a nursing home and chapters on dying and the cost of care complete this compassionate and sensible guidebook. (February 24)
