REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 05/30/1994
Pelletier ( Mind As Healer, Mind As Slayer ), a senior clinical fellow at the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention at the Stanford University School of Medicine, focuses much of his attention here on a Rockefeller-funded study he conducted chronicling the lives of 51 notables, among them Norman Lear, David Rockefeller and the late Norman Cousins, who he believes have enjoyed exemplary physical and mental health. The author contends that long-term health depends more on a positive orientation than on aerobic workouts or a special diet, emphasizing that no way of life can guarantee freedom from disease and disability--or can ensure longevity. To understand the meaning of health, he adds, it is necessary to broaden its definition beyond the physical. Optimal health requires an integration of physical, mental, spiritual and environmental well-being; health is an attitude comprising our basic beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. Though not all readers will be deeply interested in the health of the rich and famous, what does stand out is Pelletier's presentation of the extensive research now being undertaken to better understand the mind/body connection and its relationship to health. The Power of 5: Hundreds of 5 Second to 5 Minute Scientific Shortcuts to Ignite Your Energy... by Harold H. Bloomfield Published 1995 by Rodale Press

REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 12/05/1994
``All across America we're getting trapped,' Bloomfield and Cooper announce sinisterly. ``Trapped in a maze of well-intentioned but often unsuccessful `self-help' programs. Hit from all sides by fragmented advice.' Their book seeks to reverse that trend and rejuvenate us, urging readers to reinvent their lives (mental and physical) with regular, revolutionary attitude adjustments organized around the demands of our increasingly busy lives. Five minutes-or in some cases, five seconds-are all that's required, the authors insist, for losers, dabblers and dreamers who are mired off-track in various sorts of trouble to assess their problems and begin heading back to the main road. Chapters on energy management, dieting, exercise and ``mental cross-training' share space in the book with others on ``positive posture,' the uses of optimism and ``everyday spirituality.' Sidebars and bitty text inserts (e.g., quotes from Goethe) jazz up conversationally high-speed advice throughout. Maybe frenetic self-improvement is the perfect idea right now for survival. Yet the theme, spun out here with a manic esprit, makes life sound like the hobby of an aerobic robot. 175,000 first printing; author tour; serial rights to McCall's, Men's Health and Self magazines. Nature's Prozac: Natural Therapies and Techniques to Rid Yourself of Anxiety, Depression, Panic Attacks & Stress by Judith Sachs Published 1996 by Prentice Hall

REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 01/06/1997
A smorgasbord of therapies is arranged here for those looking for drug-free methods of relieving stress or coping with psychological problems. Sachs, an HIV/AIDs educator for the American Red Cross and author of The Healing Power of Sex, describes 45 natural healing approaches and techniques, including biofeedback, manipulation, meditation, nutrition and tai chi in an alphabetical format. There are also brief entries on roughly 100 specific mental and emotional problems and longer discussions of 11 major syndromes such as anxiety, depression and phobias. This cross-referenced mix of problems and solutions results in odd juxtapositions: the Alexander Technique is sandwiched between Agoraphobia and Alienation; Breathing is followed by Broken Heart, which in turn leads to Brooding. The book is intended to be consulted, however, rather than read from cover to cover, and the information under each entry is largely commonsensical. Thus, insomniacs are encouraged to forego caffeine and alcohol, enjoy a banana milkshake or an herbal sedative, press on certain acupressure points or practice visualization techniques. The descriptions of therapies are clear and the directions for performing or initiating them easy to follow. An appendix that describes mood-altering drugs (with a section on getting off medications) and a resource guide are particularly useful. For another title on this topic, see note on Natural Prozac below. (Feb.)
