From "The Breast Cancer Book of Strength & Courage:
This was a special night, a night when I would share with the public one of the most private parts of my battle against breast cancer. This was the night I would share my story of hair loss. . . . Steve turned to me, the camera took a two shot, and there I was, for the first time in my life, anchoring a newscast without a strand of hair on my head.
It was quite a moment, for many reasons. Mainly, for me, it represented how far I'd come, and how much I'd grown! Cancer has become a journey of self-discovery that has helped me develop self-confidence and learn to love myself for myself.
-- Anchorwoman Leslie Mouton, who reported the news in Texas one night while bald due to chemotherapy treatments
Perhaps you or a loved one has recently heard the words, "You have breast cancer." Now what? How can you turn these fearful words into the first step on a journey of strength and healing? You'll discover that these words are more powerful than you think. So powerful that they can help you uncover a level of bravery and fortitude you might not feel is possible right now--one that lies deep within you, ready to emerge, ready to fight. You "can transform your feelings of dread and despair into triumph.
Inside, you'll discover intimate first-person accounts of breast cancer survivors, women who confronted their diagnosis, clutched the thoughts, hopes, and encouragement already present in their daily lives, and embraced new ideas and old passions that helped sustain them during their struggle to restore their health.
These touching personal stories are told by special women who dug a little deeper to climb the biggest mountain ofall. Their reassuring words are like having a welcome friend come to you in a moment of need--an invaluable source of strength, wisdom, love, and laughter. Page after page, you'll learn not only how to survive, but also how to forge a powerful and positive mental attitude.
An official book tie-in with Cure Breast Cancer, Inc. A portion of the royalties from this book will benefit breast cancer research, education, and outreach.

05/01/2006 REVIEW: School Library Journal
Gr 6-10 -With vivid electron micrographic images of the targeted cancer cells dividing on the covers, these slim, colorful volumes are certainly eye-catching to potential researchers. Following brief introductions that include prominent survivors' stories, the texts are devoted to discussions of related anatomy and body systems, diagnosis, treatment, and future issues and possibilities in coping with the diseases. Photographs, diagrams, multihued headings, and spotlighted insets are plentiful, though sometimes impede the flow of the basic texts. All three books are solid overviews of the current understanding of these conditions, but Stokes's titles are superior in terms of their clarity.-Mary R. Hofmann, Rivera Middle School, Merced, CA

Ice Bound: A Doctor's Incredible Battle for Survival at the South Pole by Jerri Nielsen Published 2001 by Hyperion Books

Jacket Notes:
"Ice Bound" is the inspiring true story of Dr. Jerri Nielsen, the physician with breast cancer stranded at a South Pole research station, whose amazing rescue made headlines around the globe. Set in a remote and desolate yet strikingly beautiful landscape, Nielsen's narrative of her transforming experience is a thrilling adventure. Photos.
REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 01/08/2001
Nielsen spent the better part of 1999 as the physician for a team of 41 research scientists and their support group at the South PoleDa place that is completely unreachable for nine months of the year. To "winter" at the bottom of the world risks one's life; in addition, Nielsen was solely responsible for caring for the physical and emotional health of all the other "Polies." Yet, as she writes in a strong, lucid voice, she never felt afraid; in fact, as Nielsen became "of the Ice"Da transformation that brings incredible clarity about what's most important in this life, one that unites the Polies in a life-and-death symbiosis in a place where resources are severely limited and the pristine beauty is incomparableDshe felt safer than she had ever felt since childhood. Through power outages, fires and equipment failures, Nielsen found courage, until the dayDdeep into the pitch-black winterDshe absentmindedly discovered a hard mass at the top of her right breast. Harnessing the love, skills and intelligence of her fellow Polies, and by consulting with experts in the U.S. via satellite and e-mail, Nielsen conducted a biopsy on herself, using ice as an anesthetic, and completed several rounds of chemotherapy before she could be rescuedDin a daring presummer attempt. Captivating and incisive, Nielsen does not present a memoir about illness; instead, this excellent book is about life, work and the depth of human resiliency and love. (Jan.) Forecast: Nielsen's work is on a par with the best of the popular survival genre. First serial rights have been sold to Talk magazine, and A&E is including Nielsen's story in its Biography series. Interviews have been scheduled with Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America and Elle magazine. All that adds up to a bestseller.
05/01/2001 REVIEW: School Library Journal
Adult/High School-In this riveting first-person account, Nielsen describes her work as a doctor and her fight with breast cancer at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. An emergency-room physician in a major hospital, the author was burned out and broken by an abusive husband and bitter divorce. An advertisement for a job in Antarctica caught her attention and soon she was getting her bearings at the South Pole. In the first half of the book, the author does a wonderful job of describing the frozen world under the geodesic dome and the tribal existence of 41 people living on a frozen plateau in complete darkness and total isolation. In the second section, Nielsen describes her realization that she had breast cancer and that she must turn to the outside world for help. Through heart-wrenching e-mails, she plotted a course of action with a doctor in the United States. She taught a team of mechanics, welders, and other Polies to perform a biopsy and give her chemotherapy. When that failed, in a massive global effort, she was evacuated. An easy read with an engrossing story in an unforgiving setting, this is also a story of growth, endurance, teamwork, and survival.-Jane S. Drabkin, Chinn Park Regional Library, Prince William, VA

A wonderful life . . . And breast cancer. No one is immune to tragedy. Deanna Favre is living proof. A shy, small-town girl from Kiln, Mississippi, Deanna had always been perfectly content to let her famous husband steal the spotlight. Though married to the NFL's only three-time MVP, she preferred to live a life of quiet anonymity. But on December 22, 2003, when television cameras zeroed in on a somber Deanna watching her grief-stricken husband lead the Green Bay Packers to a victory over the Oakland Raiders immediately following the death of his father, the spotlight shifted. Deanna's life was about to change forever. Tragedy struck again the following October, when Deanna's younger brother, Casey, was killed in an ATV accident. Four days later-still reeling from the loss of her brother-Deanna was diagnosed with breast cancer. * * * * * * Through it all, however, Deanna has emerged a survivor. In this candid and inspirational memoir, she shares the triumphs and the tragedies of a life lived both behind the scenes and on center stage. From her years as a single mom and her high-profile marriage to Brett, to her highly publicized battle with breast cancer, and the work she is currently doing through the Deanna Favre HOPE Foundation, Deanna's story is living testament that with faith, hope, and love, ordinary people can overcome even the most extraordinary circumstances.

REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 09/03/2001
Delinsky (A Woman's Place), a prolific popular novelist, lost her mother to breast cancer and is herself a survivor of the disease. This practical guide is a worthy addition to recent literature about how individual women deal with this illness, like Jennie Nash's The Victoria's Secret Catalog Never Stops Coming (reviewed above). Delinsky has collected a compendium of survival secrets "that have nothing to do with doctors, machines or drugs and everything to do with women helping women" that she wished had been available to her when she was diagnosed in 1994. She offers short personal anecdotes contributed by breast cancer survivors of every age and background. They recount the strategies that helped them through all aspects of cancer, including diagnosis, treatment, support groups and how to best conduct relationships with family, friends and in the workplace. Upbeat in tone, the women share such tips as the types of deodorants that may be used during radiation, how to handle hair loss ("I called my hair dresser and had the remainder of my hair buzzed off.... My buzzed head represented strength and control"), what foods will lessen nausea and, in general, how to take charge of one's life and remain positive. Almost everyone will find something in this varied advice that applies to her particular situation. Several women, for example, thought that hiring a professional to clean for them was extremely beneficial during draining treatments, while another found the mindless "therapy" involved in weeding the garden helpful. Delinsky also contributes several reminiscences, e.g., of her determination to remain physically strong and emotionally healthy after her diagnosis. (Oct.)

Your Life in Your Hands: Understanding, Preventing, and Overcoming Breast Cancer by Jane Plant Published 2001 by Thomas Dunne Books

REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 01/15/2001
Plant, a British geochemist, claims that eliminating dairy products from her diet saved her from dying of breast cancer (which recurred five times)--and argues that readers can prevent such a diagnosis or recurrence by doing the same. Although this recommendation is based largely on her own experience, she initially discusses how she used her scientific training to discover what caused her cancer. Subsequent chapters address how cells become cancerous; the scientific link between dairy and breast cancer; Plant's dietary and lifestyle recommendations; and why the medical establishment and policy-makers have failed to look sufficiently at the role of dietary and environmental factors in cancer. Plant also includes worthwhile tips for coping with health professionals, conventional treatment (which she supports along with her recommended dietary changes) and the emotional impact of a positive diagnosis. The scientific case Plant builds against dairy products suggests this area is worthy of further study, but the evidence she presents is not substantial enough to warrant her claims. Moreover, her recommendation that women replace dairy products with soy products is also troublesome, as some studies show large amounts of soy stimulate breast cancer cells in women who have had cancer. Although Plant is no doubt sincere, the suggestion that women can "conquer" cancer by following the "Plant Program" is overly simplistic and optimistic. (Feb.)

Runowicz, a New York City oncologist who survived her own bout with breast cancer in 1992, offers practical, upbeat advice to women whose lives have been changed by breast or pelvic cancers. With science writer Haupt, Runowicz draws on professional expertise and personal experience to address such problems as getting follow-up care, coping with physical disabilities and treatment side effects and handling the emotional effects of fear, stress, loneliness and depression. While giving particular attention to sexual concerns, e.g., body image, fertility and menopause, Runowicz covers a broad range of issues, from how to conceal an ostomy bag during sex to dealing with family members, co-workers and recalcitrant insurance companies. Stories about her patients enliven the text and reinforce her urgings that the cancer survivor take care of herself and get on with her life. Checklists of helpful hints, an extensive list of support groups, referral services, programs, magazines and mail-order sources round out this valuable guide. (July)

REVIEW: Publisher's Weekly 05/06/2002
More and more Americans, especially those with serious illnesses such as breast cancer, are turning to complementary and alternative medicine to supplement their Western treatments. This collection of essays edited by oncologist Tripathy and acupuncturist/herbalists Cohen and Tagliaferri (who herself is a breast cancer survivor) is intended to serve as a guide to the alternative therapies most often used by women with breast cancer. The book includes dense and sometimes meandering chapters on approaches such as Chinese Medicine, vitamin and mineral supplementation, meditation and prayer. The authors maintain that little research has been conducted on these therapies because of lack of funding and the difficulty in evaluating alternative medicine separately from conventional, but that data has become increasingly available. Although most of the chapters are largely based on research, others rely simply on seemingly improbable anecdotes (for example, one chapter describes a patient who recovered from inflammatory breast cancer after she began following a macrobiotic diet). Despite its inconsistencies, women with breast cancer looking for alternative therapies might find this book to be a good start in their own research. (June)
