It takes a village! The Bettendorf Public Library Information Center would like to thank the collective village of all of our supporters, our patrons, volunteers, the City Council, our residents, Friends of the Library and the Bettendorf Public Library Foundation. Over the next several issues of Pages we would like to highlight some of these organizations and how their support helps all of us provide library services to our community.
The mission of the Bettendorf Public Library Foundation is to raise money to support, enhance and preserve Bettendorf Public Library programs and services. But what does this mean to you as a Library user? It means a lot!
Did you attend the recent, wildly successful Kids’ Experience? The Foundation supported that. Maybe you learned about some new technology through the Dick and Jane Meets Technology series of programs. Thank the Foundation for helping with that, too. If you and your children enjoyed the Page to Stage production of “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus”, or if you enjoyed reading “This I Believe” essays through One Book, One Bettendorf, or if you’re looking forward to learning about our Chinese neighbors during Global Gathering China, thank the Foundation.
And their support continues. Recently, the Foundation awarded grants to the Library for a number of different programs and services. We can thank the Foundation for upcoming events such as the Visiting with the Brontës book discussion series, next year’s Global Gathering, and the Love and Forgiveness Poetry contest, along with author visits and poetry discussions that go along with the Love and Forgiveness theme. Bettendorf kindergarten students will get an extra boost through the Launching Kindergarten Learners project.
Thanks to the Foundation, you can explore your family history through the online genealogy tool Ancestry.com. You can use the Library’s website 24/7 to research magazine and newspaper articles through Ebsco and stocks and mutual funds through Morningstar. And Library staff will become more efficient thanks to the Foundation helping us fund new technology that will allow us more time to help you connect with the materials and services you need and want.

New DVDs
When you think of romantic comedies, the name “Cary Grant” comes to mind. We’ve added some of his classics to our collection. In Father Goose, a schoolteacher and her students invade an island paradise. In I Was a Male War Bride, a French officer must resort to outlandish measures to get into the United States. Operation Petticoat is the story of a junked submarine that turns into a party boat when a group of nurses are rescued. A scientist’s fountain-of-youth formula backfires when it’s poured into the town water supply in Monkey Business, and, in Houseboat, a widower tries to raise three precocious children alone.
Special Programs and Activities for Global Gathering
Special programs and displays to enhance understanding of China continue at the Bettendorf Public Library throughout October. Program brochures are available at the library or click on the Global Gathering banner at the top of the library’s web page or visit the library’s calendar of events, both accessible at www.bettendorflibrary.com.
Don’t forget to enter the “Symbols of China” contest. Search for paper symbols of China hidden throughout the library. Fill out your entry form and deposit in the contest box located in Display Central. Not only will you learn a fact about China, but you will have a chance to win a prize.

China from the Opium War to Modern Times
Tuesday, October 7, 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Gilbert Room |
Session Two: 1912 – 2008 – From the warlord era to China’s reemergence on the world stage. After WWI, many young Chinese intellectuals turned to Communism. Out of these disasters emerged Mao Ze Dong and the Peoples Republic of China, a reemerging world power. Presented by Dick Landis, who has taught Chinese language and history courses at Dubuque-area colleges and been active in the development of both Iowa’s and Dubuque’s sister state/city relationships with China.

Hands-on Workshop on Chinese Calligraphy
Monday, October 20, 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Kelinson Room |
Perhaps the single hieroglyphic language still used today, calligraphy dates back to the Shang (1600-1100BCE) and Zhou (1100-256BCE) Dynasties when words were first carved on cow scapulae and tortoise shells. Calligraphy is not only a technique for writing Chinese characters, but with painting and poetry forms an interdependent visual and poetic art that can be appreciated for its beauty. Peter Xiao, art department chair at Augustana College, will discuss the historical background, the five important historical scripts, and the tools for this art. Under his guidance, class participants will have the opportunity to try their hand at calligraphy, using brushes and ink.
Class size is limited. Required registration begins September 15 and ends at noon on October 17 or when class is full. To register call 344-4175 or register online at www.bettendorflibrary.com.
