Summer Reading Programs for all ages at the Bettendorf Public Library
May 18 through July 25
You’ll find any number of events at the Library this summer to help you showcase your creative side. Didn’t know you had one? We’ll help you find it!
Adults can stop by the Information Desk or go online to www.bettendorflibrary.com/readingprogram to sign up for the Be Creative @ Your Library Adult Summer Reading program. Instead of the usual reading list format, participants will complete a BINGO sheet containing activities beyond reading. The Adult Reading Program is being offered cooperatively with Libraries Together: Bettendorf, Davenport, LeClaire and Scott County Libraries. We will also be partnering with the Family Museum to provide beginning classes in drawing, painting, clay work, and tap dance.
The 2009 Young Adult Summer Reading program theme is Express Yourself @ Your Library. Students entering 6-12 grades participate by keeping track of the reading they complete over the summer and earn awards. Teens will also have many chances to express themselves in a variety of ways. There will be workshops on zines (self published magazines), blogging, bookbinding, YouTube videos, and soap carving. Anime club and our Wii free play sessions will be offered.
Kids can dust off their crayons, paints, and glue bottles for the Be Creative @ Your Library reading program! Our reading program is self-paced and done at home or any other reading spot of your choice. Once participants reach set goals, they earn a variety of reading awards and a reading certificate. And, of course, there’s any number of fun events and programs to celebrate creativity!
Participants in this year’s A FAMILY OF READERS Reading Program will choose whatever titles they would like to read aloud as a family. The twist is that the reading will only be a part of the program! You will also fill out a simple game sheet that invites you to join together for a variety of creative activities. For each square that you mark off you can enter your family in a drawing for creative gift baskets.
For details on all the events we created for this summer, go to www.bettendorflibrary.com/events, or stop by the library this summer when you want to be creative!

Friends of the Library
The Spring Book Fair was held April 3, 4 and 5 and netted nearly $6,000, the highest profit of any Book Fair to date. The Friends wish to thank all who helped make it such a great success, including the volunteers that work during the book fair, and those that help prepare for the book fair, sorting and boxing donated materials. In addition to the volunteers, the success of each book fair depends on the generosity of the community donating the materials to be sold and to those who attend the book fairs to purchase the items offered. The book fairs could not be successful without all the parts that make up the whole.
The Friends membership drive continues. So far this year nearly 450 memberships have been recorded. Membership runs calendar year, so if you join now you can still attend the members preview sale for the Fall Book Fair on Friday, October 2. Joining the Friends is an affordable way to support the library. An individual membership is $5 per year and a family membership is $10. The Friends utilize the profits from membership, book fairs, magazine sales, etc. to provide materials and programming for the library.
The City of Bettendorf celebrated Friday, April 24, 2009, as Arbor Day. On that date, volunteers from Bettendorf’s Trees Are Us planted a magnolia tree on the grounds of the library and the tree was dedicated in memory of long-time Friends volunteer and Trees Are Us volunteer, Robert Ofner. Mayor Mike Freemire spoke on behalf of the City, relating Bob’s many years of dedication to both the Bettendorf Public Library and the Trees Are Us organization.
If your space is overloaded with books and magazines that you no longer need, consider donating them to the Friends for the ongoing magazine sale or the book fairs. Recycling items you no longer need gives them a new life with someone that can appreciate and enjoy them. All book and magazine donations may be deposited any of the library’s open hours in the Friends area near the entrance to the café.

DVDs
Have you seen a good silent movie lately? We have a great selection! The Thief of Baghdad, a swashbuckler starring Douglas Fairbanks, includes some rare outtakes. The reading of a will brings a killer to pick off the greedy relatives in the horror/comedy classic, The Cat and the Canary. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari tells of some brutal murders and a mysterious sleepwalker. And if you like old time comedies, we have The Stan Laurel Collection, The Harold Lloyd Collection, Arbuckle and Keaton and classics from Charlie Chaplin such as City Lights, Gold Rush, and Modern Times.

The Last Word
In celebration of creativity, we bring you an excerpt of the poem “Think Different”, courtesy of Apple Computer, from the book Tending the Fire: Poetry that sustains the courage to teach, edited by Sam M. Intrator and Megan Scribner. Check it out at the Bettendorf Public Library; the call number is 808.81 TE.
Excerpt from “Think Different”
They invent. They imagine. They heal.
They explore. They create. They inspire.
They push the human race forward.
Maybe they have to be crazy.
How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written?
Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
We make tools for these kinds of people.
While some see them as the crazy ones,
we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think
they can change they world, are the ones who do.
