Aurora's 2009 Power of One Film to explore medicine in June
Delve into the world of medicine on the big screen with four films presented by the Aurora Public Library as part of this year’s Power of One Film, the second segment in the year-long Power of One program.

“Awakenings” (PG-13)(1990)  will be shown June 4, followed by “A Beautiful Mind” (PG-13)(2001) on June 11, “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” (PG-13)(2007) on June 18 and “The Business of Being Born” (NR)(2008) on June 25. Admission is free.

All four films will begin at 6:30 p.m., and will be shown at the Colorado Film School at Lowry, 9075 E. Lowry Blvd., Building 965, at the corner of Lowry Boulevard and Yosemite Street.

“Awakenings,” a drama starring Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro, tells a powerful story about the victims of an encephalitis epidemic who have been catatonic for years but are presented with the prospect of revival thanks to a new drug.

Winner of multiple Academy Awards, “A Beautiful Mind” by director Ron Howard is the biographical tale of John Forbes Nash Jr., a brilliant but asocial mathematician who overcame years of schizophrenia to earn the Nobel Prize. It stars Russell Crowe, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly and Christopher Plummer.

“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” a French biography/drama with English subtitles, depicts the true story of Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby who suffers a stroke and has to live with an almost totally paralyzed body; only his left eye isn't paralyzed.

“The Business of Being Born” is a documentary starring actress Ricki Lake, who recruited filmmaker Abby Epstein to explore the maternity care system in America after Lake had a disappointing birth experience with her first child.

A Colorado Film School representative will briefly introduce each film. Snacks and beverages will be served. For more information on The Power of One, call 303-739-6600 or visit auroragov.org/powerofone
