Movies and More for the Holidays

Before you know it, fall will be here and the Atlantic County Library at Ventnor has something for everyone.  On September 15, we’ll be celebrating Roald Dahl’s birthday with popcorn and a showing of a movie about a little girl with extraordinary powers. On October 29, we’re celebrating Halloween by making spiced apple cider.  We’ll enjoy it with ghost stories and doughnuts.  If you’re ‘crafty’, join us at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, when we make a falling leaves banner; and on Friday, December 12 at 3:00, we’re making a cute snowman who can hold holiday cards.

Programs for Adults

For adults, we offer book discussions: Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult (Tuesday, September 16 at 2:00, The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit by Lucette Lagnado (Tuesday, October 14 at 2:00, and Little Heathens by Mildred Armstrong Kalish (Friday, November 14 at 10:00). If you’re creative, on Wednesday, December 17 at 6:00, the library is creating holiday centerpieces with Debbie from the Rain Florist. Bring a thick candle and there is a $15.00 fee.  Also, the Library is now offering English Conversation Practice  with Sheila from Literacy Volunteers of America.  This will be held on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 from October 7 to November 18 in our large meeting room.  (No class November 4 or 11).

Programs for Children

For children, in addition to our daytime storytimes (Tuesdays 10:00 ages 3-5 and Thursdays 10:00 ages infant-2), we are having a storytime at night for ages 3-5. This will be offered on Wednesday nights at 6:00 throughout October (except October 29).  On alternate Tuesdays beginning October 7, we are offering Café 5, a book discussion for ages 10-12.  Bring your library card and pick a mystery.  We’ll provide the snacks. For three weeks beginning Wednesday, September 24 at 3:30, kids 8-12 will make healthy snacks and learn about good nutrition with Joanne Kinsey, nutritionist with Rutgers Extension.  On Fridays at 3:30, beginning November 7 and for the next two weeks we are offering dramatics.  Students will learn the basics of pantomime, improvisation, and monologue with local thespian Kathy Steel. For the littlest crafters (ages 3-5), on Saturdays at 10:30 we are offering “I Can do Art Projects Too!” Bring a big shirt—we’ll get messy!  For crafty older kids (10-up) we have “Make a Gock” on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2:00.  Bring a black tube sock and decorate it as goth or crazy as you’d like.  On Saturday, December 20 at 2:00, bring your holiday gifts and prepare to wrap them in paper you create yourself.  Music and snacks will complete a fun afternoon.  On Wednesday night, October 15 at 6:00, we are honoring “Teen Read Week’ with a café night.  Share some songs, jokes, or poetry.  We’ve got the snacks.  Are you a Survivor?  On Wednesday night, November 19 at 6:00 you can use your library skills to help your tribe build a shelter.

That’s fall in a nutshell. (Sorry!)  See you at the Atlantic County Library in Ventnor.
