Atlantic County Library System to Enhance Services with New Computer System
The Atlantic County Library System will implement a state-of-the-art program this summer to support library operations and enhance services for library users. The SirsiDynix Symphony Library Management System will replace the library system's current 18-year old computer system.
When installed, the SirsiDynix Symphony system will be accessible in all Atlantic County Library System locations. Library users will have access remotely from home, school or office by going to the library's homepage at www.atlanticlibrary.org. "This new computer system is yet another example of our continuing efforts to improve public access to county programs, services and resources," stated County Executive Dennis Levinson.
Over 25 years ago, the Atlantic County Library System was one of the first libraries in the state to automate the library catalog and circulation functions. This new, third-generation computer system will continue to provide services among the county library system branches, Atlantic Cape Community College, Absecon and Margate libraries, and six area high schools and two middle schools.
"Anyone familiar with technology knows that 18 years is a very long time in the life of a computer system," says Atlantic County Library System Director William Paullin. "Upgrades and patches can only take you so far. The new computers and software will give us capabilities that didn't exist in 1991, when our current system was installed."
SirsiDynix Symphony incorporates open, industry-standard technologies that offer impressive capabilities. These include powerful interface solutions for serving library users, and comprehensive integrated management and productivity solutions. A web-based interface searches many resources simultaneously, making it easier than ever to find a wealth of information from a variety of sources such as the library catalog, electronic databases, and the Internet.
In advance of the new system, library users are being asked to provide their email address. The new system allows the library to contact users by email, which will allow for more immediate notification for holds and notices. The library system expects to implement this feature in the fall.
